Champion Sound

Champion Sound was formed in 2007 after Dubwise Productions producer and former Maccabee Sound (UK) Selecta, Chris Jay, met underground reggae party promoter, John Lumley, at an event in Brisbane’s West End. An immediate friendship developed due to their love for reggae music, and it’s ability to engage, and promote positive social awareness.

Having experienced the power and vibes of sound system culture in Jamaica and the UK, the two decided to form Champion Sound System, and engaged Heartical Hi Powa’s Stryka D to build their original boxes in his Melbourne workshop. These are still being used today, though the system has been added to over the years, now in the Champion Sound workshop.

Champion Sound began with the aims of “championing” the reggae scene in Brisbane, by providing a platform for local MCs and DJs to present their music in an authentic fashion; and to provide social, training and economic opportunities to the community at large. Pulling together a crew of immensely multi-talented individuals (performers, promoters, producers, actors, organisers, musicians), Champion Sound spent the next 6 years running programs and workshops around Queensland and Northern NSW, using the creative industries to help struggling people find a way forward.
